Brazil Joins Australia in Oil-For-Food Bribes

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Four companies from São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, one political group (Movimento Revolucionário 8 de outubro [MR-8]) connected to the PMDB, two businessmen and one diplomat were the beneficiaries in Brazil of a corruption scheme involving the government of Saddam Hussein, during the humanitarian program for Iraq, implemented by the United Nations between 1996 and 2003.

…The Brazilian companies Weg S.A., Randon Implementos, Valtra S.A. e Motocana S.A. paid bribes to sell agricultural equipment, vehicles, tires, motors and electrical equipment to Iraq, according to documents obtained by the United Nations in Iraq and in banks in Europe and the United States.

In only 5 of the contracts investigated, totaling $5.7 million in exports, the United Nations proved a payment of $432,400 in bribes to representatives of the Iraqi government, under a guise of post-sale service taxes and ground transport.

They also discovered that Saddam Hussein presented to the Movimento Revolucionário 8 of October – a faction of PMDB of São Paulo – with commission of up to $0,30 per barrel of oil on sales of more than 6.5 million barrels of illegal oil.
